Dengue cases nationwide increased by 95 percent compared to 2021

According to an epidemiological bulletin published by the Ministry of Health, the number of probable cases of dengue fever in the whole country has almost doubled since the beginning of 2021.

According to the study, almost 400,000 cases of probable dengue fever were diagnosed, which is 95% more than in the corresponding period last year. So far, there are 184 cases per 100,000 inhabitants this year.

For Rosylane Rocha, the second vice-president of the Federal Council of Medicine, two factors may explain this significant increase. The first is that dengue fever is a seasonal disease with a more common incidence during rainy and heaty seasons. And because it rained above expectations in many areas this year, it favored water accumulation, creating favorable conditions for mosquito outbreaks.

Another reason, according to Rosylane Rocha, is that fear of covid-19 caused many people to seek medical attention, which increased official data on cases of dengue fever, as the two diseases initially had similar symptoms.

There are more than 700 cases of dengue fever per 100,000 inhabitants in the Midwest, well above the national average, especially in the capitals of Goiânia, Brasília and Palmas. It is in the federal capital, home to photographer Raphael Padilha, who had dengue fever soon after recovering from covid-19 in February. Frightened by his symptoms, he began to suspect complications from covid-19. Raphael says there is a dengue epidemic in her neighborhood and not even her youngest son, nearly 2 years old, was unharmed.

A release from the Ministry of Health states that 112 deaths have been confirmed so far, out of 280 who have worsened dengue fever in the country. The records were mainly in the states of São Paulo, followed by Goiás, Bahia, Santa Catarina and Minas Gerais. In addition, more than 170 deaths are still under investigation and may be associated with dengue fever.
