Substance found to prevent exacerbation of Parkinson’s disease by 60%

uA study published in the scientific journal Molecular Neurobiology and cited in the journal Galileo reveals that in laboratory tests, the component prevented 60% of rodent neuronal death.

The new study was conducted by researchers at the Institute of Biomedicine (ICB-USP) at the University of São Paulo in collaboration with researchers from the USP Institute of Chemistry in Brazil and the University of Toronto in Canada. .

Parkinson’s disease leads to degeneration or premature death of brain cells, making the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine impossible. This deficiency affects motor skills and causes symptoms such as tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness, imbalance, speech problems, gastrointestinal, respiratory and even psychiatric disorders.

Galileo explains that for this study, the researchers performed tests on mice injected with 6-hydroxydidopamine, a compound that simulates the effects of degenerative brain disease.

In both the substantia nigra and the striatum, a greater number of brain cells and less behavioral damage were observed upon administration of AG-490.

“Mice that did not receive the substance performed 70% worse in the behavioral tests,” said Professor and Coordinator Luiz Roberto G. Britto in a press release.

According to Britton, inhibition of TRPM2 significantly reduced neuronal degeneration, especially in areas of the brain where the disease kills these cells. In addition, the phenomenon occurred when neurons form synaptic contacts, i.e., information exchange, which promotes dopamine isolation.

As the professor says, Parkinson’s disease kills brain cells due to, for example, metabolic disorders, abnormal accumulation of proteins, and increased function of calcium entry channels. However, the AG-490 partially prevented this.
