British doctors have called for new urgent treatments to eliminate the persistent infection caused by the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which has long been known as the coronavirus. As the British newspaper The Guardian shows, the patient has been identified as the first person in the world to carry the virus for more than a year.

A patient with a weakened immune system developed coronavirus in 2020 and was positive for covid-19 505 days before death. The longest known case of the disease, confirmed by a PCR test (gold standard), had survived the cancer in the United States, which was about 40 years old and tested positive for 335 days, reveals a British newspaper.

Researchers at King’s College London and the British NHS Foundation monitored nine long-term coronavirus patients to see how the virus developed over time. All had a weakened immune system due to treatment for a transplant, HIV, cancer, or other illnesses.

The infections usually lasted about 10 weeks, The Guardian reported, but two patients had the virus for more than a year. In addition to the fact that one has been infected for 505 days, the other has so far been positive for 412 days and may break the record on the next follow-up visit.

Patients with immunosuppression (a weakened immune system) are particularly susceptible to persistent coronavirus infections. In this study, four of the nine participants died, and covid accounted for about 33 to 50 percent of these deaths. Long covid can also be a source of new variants of the virus.

Genetic analyzes revealed that five out of nine patients had at least one mutation in the virus that was found to be of concern. According to the British newspaper, a patient who had been infected for 505 days had at least 10 SARS-CoV-2 mutations, including alpha, gamma, and omicrons.

Many researchers suspect that some worrying strains, such as alpha, have appeared in patients with long-term covid, but other potential sources of new variants include animals that infect the virus and transmit it to humans.
