The U.S. State Department of Health is investigating two suspected cases of measles in Piauí. The data were confirmed by Amélia Costa, coordinator of epidemiology at Sesap, who announced that two cases were registered in the municipality of São Miguel do Tapuio, 225 km from Teresina.

The first case reported by Sesap is a two-year-old child. Another case investigated is an adult whose age was not reported.

“In suspected cases, we have a two-year-old child and an adult, both from São Miguel do Tapua. Our teams have already contacted the municipality and confirmation is required for these cases. A blockade was carried out and material was collected to complete the investigation, in addition to block vaccination in the vicinity of the residences of the suspected cases, ”Amélia Costa said.

The Center for Strategic Health Information CIEVS draws public attention to the importance of measles vaccination in children. Brazil has already confirmed cases in São Paulo.

Amélia Costa, SESAP’s epidemiological coordinator and CIEVS coordinator, emphasized that until 2018, Brazil did not register cases of the disease and that vaccination against measles is one of the reasons for new cases being registered in the national territory.

“We have a report of two suspected cases of measles in our state and this situation is alarming. We ask that the residents of Piaui take their children to be vaccinated with both doses and thus guarantee a complete vaccination, we found that many children only receive the first dose and we pay attention because one dose is not enough to guarantee a complete vaccination, ”the epidemiologist emphasizes. .

Health Minister Neris Júnior draws attention to the high risk of the disease being transmitted and also calls on the population of Piauí to have their children vaccinated.

“Measles is one of the diseases that can be prevented with vaccines, which is easily contagious and can even lead to death. That is why we need to keep in mind the importance of the vaccine for our children. Coverage throughout Brazil is low and that’s why we need the cooperation of our population, which has helped us so much, to get our children vaccinated, ”the secretary said.
