Research reveals how to resist fast food

The big challenge for the dieter is to resist the numerous cravings to eat fast food, super calorie foods that can compromise your goal, even as an extra. Researchers at Washington State University in the United States found a way to resist frustration.

According to them, intense physical activity can not only help eliminate calories, but also kill the urge to eat fatty foods, also known as fast food. A study published in the scientific journal Obesity tested the hypothesis that exercise could affect the “incubation period of lust,” in which case ignoring certain foods may make you want to eat more of them.

“A very important part of following a diet is mental strength – the ability to say, ‘No, I might want this, but I’m going to abstain.’ Thus, exercise can be useful not only for physically losing weight, but also for controlling the cravings for mentally unhealthy foods, ”explains Travis Brown, a researcher in physiology and neuroscience at the university.

How the study was conducted

For this purpose, 28 mice that underwent training were used. Here’s how it worked: when the lever was pressed, it turned on the light and made a sound before dispensing the greasy tablet. Afterwards, the animals were divided into two groups and underwent 30 days without access to the fat walls.

The difference is that one got into a routine related to physical activity (running on a treadmill) and the other already had changes in what they were doing. In the next step, the team again offered a lever to make the fat tablets available, so the more intensely the trainees sought the reward less.

“Exercise is beneficial in many ways: it helps with heart disease, obesity, and diabetes; it can also help the ability to avoid some of these unacceptable foods. We are always looking for that magic pill in some form, and training is in front of us with all these benefits, ”Brown added.

They believe the results apply to humans as well. So much so that Brown described the logic based on previous research. For example, routine physical activity has been associated with less cocaine seeking by addicts who have experienced withdrawal symptoms.

In addition, the author of the study reports that fast foods are able to provide an addictive effect that is very similar to the effect of drugs on the brain. The next step for the group is to analyze different levels of physical exercise to reduce this type of craving.
