A private match is played in Germany against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Ukrainian football team competed for the first time since the start of the Russian attack in Germany in a friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach in favor of the victims of the war.

“This game is very important for our team and our country. We feel that we are not alone that the whole world supports us,” commented former internationalist Andrei Voron during the broadcast of the German channel ProSieben.

Thousands of spectators at the stadium waved Ukrainian flags and joined forces with athletes to support the country, which was attacked by the Russian army on 24 February.

Athletically, Ukraine, which won 2-1 despite being deprived of several of its internationalists who were not released by the clubs, still dreams of reaching the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Eastern European team must play in the playoffs for Scotland 1. June before a possible final against Wales four days later.

“We wanted to give Ukrainian football a chance,” said Borhan President Stephan Schippers, speaking about the club’s solidarity.

Proceeds from the challenge will be donated to associations assisting Ukrainian civilians.
