50% of survivors still have persistent symptoms after 2 years

uA new study, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, has found evidence that a significant proportion of people who have recovered from Covid-19 have at least one persistent main symptom, up to two years after infection.

The researchers found that the predominant symptoms included long-term effects on various organs in the body.

Although most of the survivors of Covid-19 had returned to work after becoming ill, half still suffer from fatigue, a follow-up study found.

“Despite the initial severity of the disease, the physical and mental health of those who survived Covid-19 improved over time, and most returned to their original job within two years; however, the burden of symptomatic sequelae remained relatively high.” .

“The health of the survivors of Covid-19 was significantly worse than that of the entire population after two years.”

“The results of the study indicate the urgent need to investigate the pathogenesis of long-term Covid disease and to develop effective interventions to reduce the risk of the condition.”

Another author of the study, Rachel Evans of the National Institute of Health and Care Research, explained: “Limited recovery from five months to one year after hospitalization is impressive in terms of mental health, physical ability, organ failure and quality of life.”

“Without effective treatments, long-term Covid could become a new, very common and long-lasting disease,” warned another author, Christopher Brightling of the University of Leicester.

The most common symptoms of Covid-19 are: tiredness, muscle pain, difficulty sleeping, decreased physical performance and shortness of breath.
