RS extends influenza vaccination to children 5–9 years of age and adults 55 years of age and older; see locations Porto Alegre | Rio Grande do Sul

This Thursday (12th), the Rio Grande do Sul State Ministry of Health (SES) announced the expansion of the groups that served in the flu vaccination campaign. From this Friday (13), municipalities can vaccinate for five to nine year oldsBesides adults over 55 years of age.

Overall with the measure 1.4 million people are eligible for vaccinationswith 695,000 children and 735,000 adults aged 55-59.

According to the state government, the flu virus suffered 272 hospitalizations and 41 deaths this year.

“These two new groups focus the highest hospitalization rates on those who are not eligible for the campaign and need protection,” says Health Secretary Arita Bergmann.

Until then, the flu vaccine was given to children aged six months and five years, adults over 60 years of age, pregnant women, mothers of newborns, comorbidities, and people with permanent disabilities, among others.

The trivalent influenza vaccine used by the Unified Health System (SUS) has been manufactured by the Butantan Institute. The vaccine is effective against H1N1, H3N2 and type B influenza strains. The nationwide vaccination campaign will continue until June 3rd.

According to the municipal health agency, children aged 5 to 9 years should have a break of at least 15 days between the flu vaccine and Covid-19. Adults do not need to respect this range.
