After more than 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic, proliferation restrictions are increasingly being relaxed in Brazil and around the world. Here, the government has already issued a decree at the end of April that will end the country’s health crisis.

However, experts are still reluctant to decide to end the pandemic because the virus is capable of mutating.

Esper Kallás, a professor at the Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the University of São Paulo (USP), explains that, contrary to what was initially believed, the Covid-19 virus is highly variable.

“We see the behavior of the virus, which shows its ability to mutate. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was believed to be a relatively stable virus that brought no surprises, but time has shown us to be wrong. This made him adapt to the main goal he wants to spread, “he explained to the Rádio USP.

The virus is spreading among children

The moving average of new cases in Brazil has risen slightly to 16,421 last Thursday (12). However, several schools report outbreaks mainly in children who have not been fully vaccinated.

Professor Kallás argued that protective measures, such as the use of a mask, are still in use mainly in schools to protect children, and confirmed the importance of vaccines because most children do not have a complete vaccination system.

“Children ended up, this time much more clearly, acting as the main vector for the spread of the virus, this has happened all over the country. If we protect children, we will also protect the adults around them, “he concluded.
